- There is a work party this Saturday, the day before the Primitive Shoot on Sunday. If you didn't get an announcement via e-mail, it's because we don't have your e-mail address in our database. Here's what was sent out:
Is it August already? It must be time for the Olympic BHU Work Party competition. This year's August 16 competition introduces the new singles and mixed double Bale events. This combines toting, strapping, binding, placing, facing, targeting, and other verbs relating to slogging bales up to the target houses and replacing the old, shot-out bales. This should be especially of interest to the compounders, so we hope to see a good turnout from the US team. The judges will be awarding extra points for difficulty in this sport.
Don't forget the 400m rake event and the pairs, synchronized field-grooming event.
Show up at 8 for the opening ceremonies. The final parade should take place around noon after a short archery competition centering on the 20m Traditional and 60m Compound events.
Competition in this event automatically qualifies you for the US Open Field Maintenance which will take place in the same facility in September.
All competitors are invited to the Sunday, August 18 Primitive Shoot where they can lord their Olympic experiences over all the other competitors that didn't manage to qualify for Saturday's event.
- Your Board at WorkâNotes from the August board meeting.
- We discussed the finances, which look good, and the membership, which is holding. We talked about ways to increase membership.
- We had more long discussions about the free archery lessons and how we might improve our support for them. We plan to also add another day per month of free archery instruction.
- There was a debriefing about the latest newsletter and plans for the next.
- We reviewed the upcoming Primitive and Wounded Warrior Project shoots.
- Congratulations to Tom and Theresa, who should be celebrating 2 days of marriage tonight.

A message from Ray:
BHU is sponsoring a home-study-based Bowhunter Education course on Saturday, August 30, from 1p.m. to 5p.m. The cost for this course is $20.00 to cover the materials. A certificate of successful completion of this course is required for bowhunting in several states (such as Idaho and Montana), although not yet in California. Prior to the August 30 class, participants must complete an online course, which is designed to take about eight (8) hours, and cover the bulk of the material. The four-hour class on August 30 will consist of a short review of the online course, some hands-on exercises, in-the-field exercises, and a written exam. This class will be limited to 20 students. If you want to sign up for the class, or if you have questions, email Ray Roan at drrcroan@netscape.net.
And now a message from Tom:
Hello to all BHU Members!
As you may know, BHU offers free lessons to the public on the first Sunday of each month as a public service. Its a great way to share our enthusiasm for the sport of archery, share some knowledge & experience with others, and build community awareness and support for the archery range at Stevens Creek County Park. If you would like to help, the club is offering an opportunity to receive training and certification by the National Archery Association (NAA) and National Field Archery Association (NFAA) as an archery instructor for free! An instructors training class will be held on Saturday Aug. 2 from 9 AM-5 PM. If you are willing to volunteer a couple of times a year to help teach beginners and participate in a free training seminar, contact Tom Hinojosa at tom.hinojosa@yahoo.com and sign-up for the class. Space is limited to the first 12 volunteers!

- There is a work party this Saturday, July 12. Please show up at 8 AM for a couple of hours of work and camaraderie and to meet the new Rangemaster, David Lewis. Keep in mind the minor maintenance occurs all the time, not just at work parties. We need to take advantage of weather and when people are available for some tasks. You may need to stand by for short periods while that activity takes place as it has priority over other activity.
- Following the work party, there is a surprise party for Harvey honoring his 80th birthday and many years of service to the club. Don't tell Harvey and spoil the surprise :-).
- Your Board in Action
- Discussion of old business, including the transition to new check signers.
- Discussion of new signage for the range.
- There will be a Bowjam/Primitive Skills Workshop on Saturday, July 26. Look for more details here, but there will at least be fire making skills and primitive bow making.
- We will be providing archery lessons for the Santa Clara County Parks as part of a summer program they are hosting.
- Review of the draft newsletter. There are a few updates and additions we need before it's sent out.
- Discussion of upcoming special events.
- Discussion of the archery instruction and support for other club instructors.
- Long discussion of range issues, such as bale replacement, fixing target houses, bridges, bee tree integrity, and a new archery lesson target.
- A discussion and plan for making sure we have adequate tear down support after each shoot. No shoot will start until we get commitments from enough people to fully take down all the targets and equipment.
- A number of archers are "high drawing" on the field. We reiterated that it's the duty of every archer on the field to enforce safety. If you see someone high drawing a bow, politely tell them that what they are doing is dangerous and explain how to not high draw. If the archer refuses to act safely, inform the ranger and a club officer, including the license plate of the car.
- We have a shoot planned for September, a charity benefit for the Wounded Warriors Project. Details to follow.
- We will have a Toys for Tots charity shoot in December again. Details to follow.
- A discussion of the status of the August 17 Primitive Shoot.

- A reminder that there is NO League Shoot on Tuesday, 7/8.
- And a reminder that people are still causing problems with their League Shoot score sheets. Some are putting only their first name, some are omitting the dates, some are omitting the class, some are not summing the scores. Any of these will likely cause your score to not be recorded. It's up to you to completely fill in the score card and verify your score on the web site to see if things are correct. Just take the few seconds to do this correctly. The people who enter the score into the database do NOT know who Ed or Chris is, they do not know that you shoot recurve, they do NOT know what week you shot, and so on. After the last week, when awards are handed out is too late.
Sunday, June 29, 2008
Contrary to the posted flyer, there will a shoot this Tuesday, July 1 and there will not a shoot on Tuesday, July 8. Please check the League Shoot Scores link to the left which should soon have the final scores for leg one of the shoot.

Pictures from the Sunday, June 15 Hunt Tuneup Shoot can be found HERE.

- Don't forget the shoot this Sunday. Details at the top of the page. Expect a call to arms email for Saturday. Again, if you don't get these monthly email messages, its because we don't have your correct email address. Send your email address to info@bhuarchers.org, making sure you include your full name so I know for whom the address applies. Also, this service is only available to paid members.
- We are still getting people who are not filling out the score cards correctly. Include your full name, not just your first or last name. Make sure your shoot class is recorded EVERY TIME. Include the date. Make sure you add up your scores. If you don't do this, you risk your score not being recorded.
- Our warrior Mike Guerra is back from the mideast. He showed up tonight, shooting strong. Welcome back!
- Be sure to check your league scores via the link on the left. We're almost through leg one and you need to verify that we have all your scores, that the scores are correct, and that we have you in the right class.

Your board in action
- There were introductions all around as the new board was seated. Look at the Contact Us/Officers link on the left to meet your new board.
- A discussion of the upcoming surprise birthday party for Harvey Stray on Saturday, July 12. Come join us.
- Ed recalled how the new bales were not delivered on Saturday as expected and were, instead, unexpectedly delivered on Sunday. Not knowing how, with only an hour's short notice, we were going to get volunteers up to the range to help unload them, Ed went to the range to find a dozen people there, all ready to help. Trucks and muscles were organized to move the bales right out to the practice range where Greg was already organizing the replacement of the target bales. Many thanks to all that helped.
- A discussion of the transition of signature cards for the new treasurer, and who else should have signature authority.
- A report on progress in getting new signage for the range, including the revised rules from the County.
- Neither the BowJam nor the Primitive Skills Workshop is scheduled to happen this year.
- A discussion of support and need for our ever expanding training program. We hope to construct a separate "wall of bales", away from the practice range. We also hope to get more instructors qualified. We also discussed guidelines and approved a new fee structure for corporate events.
- We plan to offer a special archery event to the County, which would accept registration as part of a larger summer events program. We set up guidelines for what we could support.
- A discussion of new membership mechanics—entering data into the database and what we send in the mail to the new members.
- A discussion of the content for the upcoming newsletter.
- The fee for an upcoming Level 1 archery training course can be paid by the club for any member that agrees to use that training to help during the regular, Sunday training sessions. A minimum of helping the club put on 2 training sessions needs to be provided by the member in order to qualify for the free Level 1 course.
